Max number of rules.

I remember that Andrew once said 1500 rules to be the maximum. There should be a post around here somewhere. Cheers.

Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0

7 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

No problem waiting a few months, BWM has been working perfectly for years. I liked it very much but I'm in need for something more powerful. I don't know what happened here, in my opinion SoftPerfect is still one of the few developers with excellent support. Just too bad to see that a good product like BWM is on hold. Oh well. I will keep monitor these forums for a while. Cheers, Arthur.

Help with Squid Please

7 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Hi, It seems that your setup is working now. If your internet is slow, there could be a change your BWM ruleset is not correct. Squid normally doesn't slow internet, it only caches objects. If there are problems, the same "cache.log" file will show them. Check it often. On another note, the whole squid concept is not all that spectacular. I mean, to see the benefits you need t

Squid is running, but it is not caching any objects. There are at least two problems with your setup: 1. 2010/10/01 15:40:57| Accepting transparently proxied HTTP connections at 0.0.0.0, port 3128, FD 13. << You need to specify the IP address of the network card for Squid. That is done in Squid.conf. Choose the IP of the card facing the LAN side. 2. Cannot use localsource in your rulese

Help with Squid Please

Well if squid is active, most probably it would cache something yes. You can look up the logs to see if you get hits, the file is called "access.log". There is another file, "cache.log" that logs messages, can be used to look up errors/events. And yes, squid automatically caches some content, but not everything. You can change some settings in squid.conf but it should wor

Blocking DNS requests

7 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Perhaps it can be done with two rules. The first one explicitly allowing DNS requests to the server say 192.168.1.1 on port 53 TCP/UDP After that a block rule for all other requests on that port 53. Have never tried it, others may have a more detailed solution. Cheers!

POP, SMTP and HTTPS doesn't work!

7 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

If you are using the internal bridging from BWM it is enough. It's one or the other: Or the internal bridge or ICS but not both. I have a BWM+Squid+Windows XP setup and it all works together. Make sure you haven't got some firewall blocking your traffic. First test your setup without Squid. If that works, add Squid. If you want to use ICS then you will have to enable it on the WAN (external

Wow, that's awesome Andrew, anyway I'll see if it is possible to make a donation to support your work. It is the least I can do, and you deserve it. Gives me some peace of mind also. I'm not super savvy as it comes to networking but whenever possible I will assist on the forums. Cheers, Arthur.

Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0

Fantastic news, so if all goes well we have a final before years end! Andrew, if version 3.0 comes out, does it mean I have to buy a new license? I read somewhere that my license is valid for all 2.x releases but not anymore for 3.x releases? Cheers, Arthur.

More than a year has passed since the last final version. The last beta was from October 26, 2009. It's a sad thing, you have still a very loyal user base. Cheers, Arthur.

using the computer as a router

Yes, you can use Kerio Winroute. It is being used in combination with BWM by one of the forum members. Cheers.

BWM 2.9.16 BETA

Lucas, that is a memory error for sure. Try memtest or goldmemory or some similar test. Prime is also for the processor but in your case I'll bet it's the memory. Cheers, Arthur.

Version 2.9 preview - PPPoE questions

Waelosman, that's MikroTik, it's wireless equipment. To get to the routerOS you can download Winbox: Launch it and see if it finds your router. The login is "admin" and there is no password. Cheers, Arthur.

BWM and Windows7

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

I also have the same question about software compatibility. I'm thinking about Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bits, but would like to have some feedback from people using BWM on that platform. Perhaps Andrew can confirm compatibility? Cheers, Arthur.

Tune Windows TCP/IP

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

It depends on the type of connection. At the moment I only adjust the maximum allowed half open connections. If the server has a PPPOE or PPPOA connection, you could adjust the packet size. I've also seen tools that adjust the RWIN value in the registry. Broadbandreports has a lot of info about it. Cheers, Arthur.

Ip + mac lock not working

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

That´s a good tip from Lucas. I think this will work for you. In fact, what Lucas is doing with this batch file is modifying the ARP table on startup. He adds static entries with the option -s. ARP is responsible for the IP-to-Physical address translation. I have to confess that I never used double bridging in BWM. Perhaps Andrew can tell us if the software is capable to do that. That could

Ip + mac lock not working

You can create MAC groups with several MAC´s. In your ruleset you specify the group, not one individual MAC address. It works fine, try it. You have both adsl modems bridged to the same LAN card? I don´t think the drawing is correct. LAN card no. 4 is not bridged? The .101 range is a subnet of .100. If you want to have a completely different IP range, use 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x range. Two d

bwm and dns on clients

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Hi, Well, until now I´m using external DNS, mainly level3 because my ISP is filtering web pages on the DNS level. I don´t like it when the ISP decides what we can see and what not. Using level3 DNS works fine. You could also use OpenDNS. It depends on your location. Some people would use their router IP as the DNS server. I believe the router forwards the requests. I never point the cli

xbox live and bwm

I can confirm what Andrew says. I have one user on the network with a Xbox live, other users with voip adapters and they all work without problems. Cheers, Arthur.

where does this box sit on installation

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Hi Alan, Normally, the box sits between your router and the users. All traffic will flow through the BWM box. Indeed it will have two network cards, one on the Internet side and one on the lan side. BWM never quits working, at least not when you use the final version. I'm using the software for years and never had a problem besides minor configuration issues. In the event that BWM quits

Don't know about Shunt, but these changes will come in very handy: "Changes in IP/MAC Groups: 1- Permit to link IP+MAC "Require MAC Address match" feature 2- Permit to choice group of IPS Share the rates or Individual rates to each IP -------------------- Changes in Port Mapping 1- Be able to redirect connections to another host (another host with linux+squid)"

Question about rule + Squid.

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Thanks for clearing this up Andrew. In fact, I have my rules set exactly as in your example. I see that "Additional Processing" is just that, the mapping is additional to the normal rule that is already working the way it should. I have read the lines on SSL from the link you gave me. It appears that Squid does support this type of traffic, but it does not interpret nor process it

Bandwidth Manager rules and Squid

8 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

After the recent discussion about Squid and BWM, I reviewed my ruleset and found that I do not follow the manual on that subject. I have one simple rule per client and do not use a catch all squid rule. The squid mapping is defined in the advanced properties of each rule. In destination port I did NOT define port 80. So in effect, all traffic goes to Squid but squid only caches http traffic.

File Sharing Programs

9 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Yes it´s posible, there are some ways to limit filesharing programs: - SBM can detect the P2P, Emule packets etc. - You can limit the number of connections - You can limit large transfers. I´m using SBM for some time now and frankly, P2P is the least of my concerns. Cheers, Arthur.

Version 2.9.12 Beta is out

9 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

Hello Rich2871, Please check your rules, I think you have selected "any interface" for each rule including the final block rule. You can change this to "LAN interface" because that's the interface where your clients connect. You should not ave to limit the network card connected to you router. After you correct this, you will be able to get online without any rule for th

Version 2.9.12 Beta is out

9 years ago, by Arthur in Bandwidth Manager Forum

You do not need any rule for the host computer, it goes directly out the WAN side while SBM is set to limit the LAN side. Perhaps you want to limit the host computer, in that case you should apply the rule to the WAN (router) side only, instead of "any interface". It would be better to assign a static IP to network card that goes to your router, and define a static route if you cann

squid and bwm rules

Well, here comes the obvious: Andrew, Is there a posibility you will release a Linux version of BWM in the future? I would recommend not to use the 3.0 version of Squid, there are some bugs present and they have not been resolved since 2005. It's still an experimental version. Cheers, Arthur.

squid and bwm rules

Yeah! That would be absolutely fantastic! It will be posible for BWM to recognize content from the cache and content retrieved from the web. All content served from the cache will be served at lan speed to the user, while content from the web will still be limited. This is so much better, a great improvement of the service. Can't wait to test it! Cheers, Arthur.
