Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0   29 August 2009, 06:11

Hi, I have some suggestions to BWM... (To who have a lot of rules. I have more than 500 rules, it's a hard work to change all when I need)

--------------------
Changes in Quota Manager: (In advanced options of quota manager)

1- Feature "Process through the following mapping" inside in advanced options of quota manager
2- Feature "Dynamic Allocation" inside in advanced options of quota manager
3- Feature "QoS" inside in advanced options of quota manager
4- Feature "Short packet flood penalty" inside in advanced options of quota manager
5- Feature "Timetable" to permit changes in rates in the specified time - inside in advanced options of quota manager
--------------------
Changes in IP/MAC Groups:

1- Permit to link IP+MAC "Require MAC Address match" feature
2- Permit to choice group of IPS Share the rates or Individual rates to each IP
--------------------
Changes in Port Mapping
1- Be able to redirect connections to another host (another host with linux+squid)
--------------------

This changes will economize much time for the network admin
Samuel (shunt), you agree with me in some aspects?

Don't know about Shunt, but these changes will come in very handy:

"Changes in IP/MAC Groups:

1- Permit to link IP+MAC "Require MAC Address match" feature
2- Permit to choice group of IPS Share the rates or Individual rates to each IP
--------------------
Changes in Port Mapping
1- Be able to redirect connections to another host (another host with linux+squid)"

The IP+MAC match is especially important for me.

Cheers,
Arthur.

Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0   31 August 2009, 14:30

Hi Arthur,

Andrew can be create a new feature called "Profile Manager" to permit to link these features above "process through a following mapping, dynamic allocation, QoS, short packet flood penault and timetable"

This can save much time for network admin

Cheers,
Lucas

Sorry guys for paying little attention to the bandwidth manager and this forum generally in the recent weeks. I was pretty busy with study and personal affairs, however now everything seems to be settled down and I am ready to continue working on the product and be in touch with you regularly ok, yes, thumb up

The idea about profile manager sounds good as this would apparently simplify managing a large bunch of rules. I will implemented this either as a set of profiles bound with the rules, where a profile is a set of other settings (mappings, dynamic allocation, quotas, etc) or as a find-and-replace tool making updating multiple rules at once possible.

This is excellent news! It seems that Andrew came back with full power. laugh

Great product.
There is the option to have an alert message display onscreen when bandwidth exceeds a certain limit over so many minutes.
But this message times out, staying up only a minute or so. If the user is not at the computer that minute, the message is missed.
I realize the user is given the option to run a program in addition to, or instead of, the message.
Even so, please let the message stay onscreen (dated and timed) until the user clears it.
Or at least give the user the option of allowing the message to stay until cleared.
Thanks.

Andrew, don't forget this modification, this is very important too:

Changes in IP/MAC Groups:

1- Permit to link IP+MAC "Require MAC Adress match" feature
2- Permit to choice group of IPS Share the rates or Individualy rates to each IP

Added ok, yes, thumb up

Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0   28 October 2009, 03:55

Other sugestions: (For a near future - BWM 5.0 or other product Softperfect laugh)

Captive Portal (Hotspot): Users will be redirected to a web portal with login and password. The software will prevent for double login. (Hotspot + IP + MAC - very good security)

Embedded DHCP Server: The rule will have a box to assign DHCP to specified MAC. Or BWM will be capable to talk with other Dhcp Server (Like Hanewin DHCP Server)
This suggestion is to facilitate the work and do not need to access the server through VNC. Finally, do everything through the BWM GUI.

+ Make bridge with two or more Interfaces (Some ISP have two or more Internet Links)

Andrew, get the best ideas and discard the daydreams. hahahaha laugh

Would it be possible to have a remarks column on the right side of the summery widow.
As I control my BWM remotely I have the have it large enough to read, in doing so I then have to scroll from side to side to see who is doing what. If there was a remarks column near the usage column I could put the user name or any other remark there to assist with control.

GUI version for Smartphones like IPHONE!!! smile

This will support me to work anyplace anytime.

For now, Im using Jaadu VNC (iPhone) to access my server and use BWM, but a little difficult and slow.

You can sell it as application like in app store.

THANKS!

Suggestions for the new BWM 3.0   12 November 2009, 04:52

Is there any way to have BWM Automatically detect active users and evenly distribute traffic between them? This feature is useful for web servers, for instance, where the IP addresses of the remote machines are not known in advance, allowing traffic shaping with a single rule for a group of users.

For example, if there are 3 users connected then each will receive 33% of available upstream bandwidth. When another user connects the allocation is changed to 25% each (100% divided by 4 users).

Dynamic rules also should allow for users who are not using their full allocation that they are given. For example, if 3 users are connected but one of them is using only 10% of the upstream bandwidth rather than 33%, then the other two users will share the remaining 90% (i.e. 45% each). Likewise, if a user is connected to the server but not currently downloading anything, they will not be counted and the other two computers will receive a full 50% each.

I think this would probably help everyone out.

Also i may be wishful thinking but, anyone else want 802.1q vlan taggin support? This would help alot of us out that have alot of interfaces.

Thanks, Cory
Maciek

option modyfi rule--> Source:
when I select "any IP address" I would like to have option to set up "exeptions"
for example:
I allowed unlimited transfer rate for port 80, but I don't want to give that for some source IP in Internet

There'll be no GUI for iPhone, BlackBerry, Nokia, you name it. However, it is possible there'll be a simplified web-interface (as Lucas suggested) ok, yes, thumb up

As to Cory's suggestion, this has been asked several times already and I am hoping to implement this as a QoS feature currently being in development.

With regards to Maciek's comment, it can be easily achieved by using a group. Simply create a group for which you do not want unlimited transfer rate. Then assign this group to the source, Finally, turn the 'Invert source address' option on. This will effectively allow full speed for any address except those listed in the group.

Andrew,

New suggestion:

Is possible to do a temporary redirect to a -welcome page- on the first browse of the user? And if the user is inative for a (time, 30, 40, or 50min) the welcome page is show again...

It is possible to implement this on new future BWM version (or in other time)?

Thanks

Hi Lucas,

I am considering moving this functionality to a separate product code-named SoftPerfect Captive Portal smile As its name suggests, it would be a self-contained product that being linked to a Wi-Fi card or an access point, could provide all the necessary services such as user registration, bandwidth/quotas, welcome page, etc. This would be an easy solution for small and very small WISPs such as hotels, cafes, etc.

What do you think?
Andrew.
