"Mount image file" works, but "Add disk" does not

"Mount image file" works, but "Add disk" does not   26 October 2012, 15:37

Hi Folks,

Having a problem getting a persistent image, created by SoftPerfect's RAM Disk software, to load automatically. The image, which is 512 Mb, can be mounted (Image > Mount Image...) and dismounted (Image > Unmount Image...) without problem. I've installed software into it, unmounted it, mounted it and run the software fine. I cannot, however, successfully get it to run on startup with either "Disk > Add..." or "Disk > Add Boot Disk...". In either case I get the error message: "Operation failed with status code = C000009A and image status code = Image load succeeded". Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Thanks.

Re: "Mount image file" works, but "Add disk" does not   26 October 2012, 16:36

Is this Windows XP 32-bit?

mount image file works but add disk does not   27 October 2012, 13:10

Correct. I'm having to mount and unmount manually when I boot / shutdown (though I could probably not bother unmounting and it will still persist correct?). Really I'm practicing for my move to Win 7 64 bit with 32 Gb of RAM (before Christmas or perhaps wait for the boxing week sales).

I appreciate your help a lot Andrew!

How much RAM is installed in your system?
Try to create smaller image, for example, 256 MB.

mount image file works but add disk does not   30 October 2012, 10:52

Why would the amount or RAM matter? The image mounts just fine. Why should automatic mounting be any different?

Anyway, this system has 2Gb or RAM. 256 MB will not mount when "Added", neighter will 128. Sometimes 60Gb works, sometimes it doesn't.

mount image file works but add disk does not   01 November 2012, 13:59

Hi there,

I have exact same problem using the RAM disk on my XP 32bit.
I have 2GB RAM. so I want to create a 300MB RAM Disk. at the time to create, I have 1000MB available RAM. but the "Add" command won't work. it gave the C000009A error code, and can not add a RAM disk. the image file I created separately, 300MB is mounting ok. but I tested the disk performance using CrystalDiskMark for the "mount" method, the disk performs = HDD performs. so the "mount" basically works as HDD, not RAM drive.

then, I deleted the image, and created a 256MB image, then "add" it again, now it works.

even though my task manager and the "add' window told me I have 1GB memory available, but add a 300MB RAM disk is not working using Softperfect Ramdisk, with the C00009A - insufficient resource error.

and on the same PC, I can smoothly create a 300MB RAM disk using other RAM disk software, such as Bond Disc, or Dataram.

So I think the Softperfect RAMdisk must be using a larger resource requirement when creating a RAM disk. Hope you can take a look for that.

BTW, the "Add" works ok on the Win8 ENT x64. but it seems conflicts with Win8's Task manager. I tried to open task manager, it flashed then exit. I could not bring it up. keep trying for a few times, it finally shows. but soon it exit again. it only happened when I installed Softperfect. and some other program seems has competitability with it too.
like Firestorm SL viewer for Second Life. I want to set the cache folder to the ram disk. but when I click "set" to choose the RAM disk, the whole firestorm crashed. and it is repeately crashed whenever I tried to use "set" to choose cache folder. I had to edit the setting file to manually change the cache location. then start firestorm, without the need to click "set", then firestorm works ok.
I have tried both "removable" and "non removable" types of RAM disk, both all crashed firestorm when clicking "set" botton to set cache file.

despite the RAM disk performance is staying ahead of competitors, the software itself has some glitches, hope you will improve it soon.

thanks.

mount image file works but add disk does not   04 November 2012, 21:43

Hi Michael,

The issue with the inability to create medium to large RAM disks on 32-bit systems is known, and we'll have it fixed in the upcoming release.

This issue is not present on 64-bit systems.

yes, I agree the issue still persists with version 3.3.3 for 32-bit systems, it however works for 64-bit OS

In fact the system freezes on mounting the image file. You can create an image but cannot mount it

please fix this one tiny bug. Thank you

mount image file works but add disk does not   25 March 2013, 21:34

Hello everyone, I think I have the same problem but I have W7 Ultimate 64bit... I have created persistent ram disk of 300MB, at most I had 1010MB created and loaded as persistant. If I try to make 1020MB or more, I get error: Creation of image file failed. (Image, create image then go to Disk, Add and selected earlier created image, selected Save contents to image, NTFS). Also I succseeded to create removable of size 3100MB. But what I need is at most I can get, lets say 4500MB for game files. Totaly I have 8GB and and very rarely system uses 3GB, ussualy 1.5- 2GB. when mounting image ussualy I get this error "Operation failed with status code = C000009A and image status code = Image load succeeded" Plus, before big image mount, I unmout all the rest, delete it and later I am deleting created svi file: just in case it may interfear with earlier created files. There is probably something I am doing wrong. And sorry for grammar mistakes I made here

RAM Disk doesn't mount   24 December 2015, 20:51

Hi there

I've been using RAM disk for a month or so to store a bunch of data - I have 16 gig of RAM and I have set up a RAM disk of 4.

All was going well but now the disk doesn't appear when I launch the tool. The image file is still there but I can't mount it or look at the contents. Is there a way to recover the data?

Cheers,
Steve

What about mounting the image via Image - Mount Image in the main menu?

Re: RAM Disk doesn't mount   29 December 2015, 21:51

Hi Andrew

Your suggestion worked fine for me and allowed me to mount the image and get going again, thanks for that.

Unfortunately I have now developed another issue - I get error C0000098 when I attempt to mount the image. Looking at previous post I can see other people have had a similar issue - I couldn't see if it has been resolved yet, has it?

I can see that the size of the file has increased slightly from the original 4 GB to 4.03 GB (4,327,997,440 bytes) - which was a surprise. In the previous posts CCleaner was mentioned as a possible problem - I don't have that installed on my machine so it can't be that. Is there a way to recover the image or at least the data from the image?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: RAM Disk doesn't mount   29 December 2015, 22:03

Unfortunately we don't know what causes this, but sometimes an image file gets damaged and slightly grows in size.

If the RAM Disk app refuses to mount it, try a third-party disk mount utility that supports entering an offset, like OSFMount, in which you need to enter the offset of 4096 bytes to the data when mounting the image file. An image file is essentially a 4K header followed by raw disk data.

If successful, you can create a new image and copy the data to it. Otherwise if OSFMount cannot mount the image at the 4096 bytes offset, I am afraid the file system and data may be damaged beyond repair.

Re: RAM Disk doesn't mount   29 December 2015, 22:09

Hi Andrew

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly - really appreciate it. I'll give OSFMount a try.

Assuming I recover the data, can you suggest ways to minimise the likelihood of it occurring again?

Cheers,
Steve
Hi Andrew, unfortunately OSFMount seemed to have problems as well.

I could mount the disk but when I tried to view the contents I got an error - "the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable"

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: RAM Disk doesn't mount   29 December 2015, 22:35

With the cause being unknown, I can only recommend to make backup copies of your image files. Alternatively don't use images at all, instead use a file level backup utility like Robocopy or Unison.

Sometimes you can get the answer faster if you try the forum search and/or have a look at the software user manual to see if your question has already been answered.
