Error starting Print Inspector

Print Inspector has suddenly started popping up an error screen saying that the printer is unavailable when I attempt to start the GUI. This message pops up repeatedly, faster than I can close them, and will not allow me to access the controls to add or remove a printer, or check the settings to see if that password has changed. I can print just fine, and access the printer manually via the Printers folder, but Print Inspector is not working at all.

Just a clarification on the error I get when starting Print Inspector. It says: Unable to open \\Elserv\HP CLJ 4700 PCL6: System error. Code:5. Access is denied.

I have it using administrator privileges, and logging in as the administrator with the correct password. I have tried a complete un-install and re-install, and still have the same problem.

This only started a short time ago. Until Dec. 20, the program worked perfectly for months.

This message says that Print Inspector cannot open the printer using the account you used to login the system. What I would recommend for now is to open a registry editor (regedit.exe), open the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SoftPerfect\Print Inspector\View and locate the UseAdminPriv parameter. If it is set to 1, try setting it to 0. If it is set to 0 try setting it to 1. Then run Print Inspector again and tell me the result.

I changed the setting from 1 to 0, and at least the program will run. When I attempt to pause printing, I again get System Error. Code: 5. Access is denied. If I go in and re-enter the administrator information, I am still denied and turning the Use Administrator Privileges back on gives me the same error as I originally stated.

Are you able to manage (particularly pause/stop/cancel jobs) this printer from the Windows Printers and Faxes folder?

From computers logged in as the administrator, yes, I can manage the printers. From my computer with its log on, no, I cannot.

Ok, let me rephrase my question. You have installed Print Inspector on a specific machine and use a specific user name and password to login into the system. Are you able to manage printers from this machine with the user name and password (which you use to run Print Inspector) via the Windows Printers and Faxes folder? If no, your account just does not have enough privileges to open the printer with administrative access (why you are getting code 5 : access denied).

I think I have it fixed now, but I have no idea what happened that made it stop working after six months when, to my knowledge, nothing had changed. I had to delete my user profile from the network and re-create it. I basically re-created it identically to what it had been, and now everything works correctly once more. All I can surmise is that somehow my profile got corrupted, and the only indicator that the corruption happened was that Print Inspector quit working.

Thanks for the help.
